issue: firefox can't connect securely because the site uses a security protocol which isn't enabled
Tuesday, April 24, 2007
Most of us access to some secure website daily to view our bills, make payment online and more. Firefox, our best companion by default has disabled some security protocol that will prompt an error whenever we try to load a page by using those disabled security protocol.
On my part, it fails me when I was trying to access maxis personal billing web service. Firefox gave me an error which says "Firefox can't connect securely to ebpsweb.maxis.net.my because the site uses a security protocol which isn't enabled".
The workaround for this issue is simple, we need to enable the security protocol by entering to the firefox configuration page - just type about:config in the address bar and press enter.
A page will load up with many funny looking items. Without looking at those things, type security.ssl3.rsa_rc4_40_md5 in the filter box. After that, you will see the security.ssl3.rsa_rc4_40_md5 being loaded in the page. Double click on the item, and walla~! You've enabled the protocol.
Just refresh the online billing website, and you can now enter without any error message given by firefox ;)
Note:
This workaround applies to firefox 2.x in any platform, inclusive Ubuntu :)

Thanks for the posting! I was having trouble connecting to a new Cisco PIX 515E with Firefox 2.0 on a MacBook until I found your blog.
Although I had some reservations about enabling 40-bit RSA encryption (I don't think it's secure enough), I was able to connect, and that's the important thing.
